Gaby Collins-Fernández: "Art in Love" at Rachel Uffner
September 6–October 19
Gaby Collins-Fernandez is concerned with the raw material of lived experience and the digital frequency that we personally stream. This shapes our present, just as art and material history shape our past. It should come as no surprise that Collins-Fernandez resists the supposed binary between representation and abstraction. The artist is best known for creating mixed-media paintings that merge radical self-portraiture, early 2000s digital aesthetics, and strange materials like beach towels. She also hails from a tradition of artists who write. She moonlights as the publisher of Precog, a yearly, independent magazine coedited and published with Florencia Escudero and Kellie Konapelsky that explores material and digital culture, gender, art, and writing. She has also curated with Drea Cofield and Jonah Parzen-Johnson several music and art shows as part of BombPop!Up. She’s an artist in pursuit of alternatives.
