This new body of work, titled Seventh Heaven, rejects modern humanity’s lust for utopia in favor of recognizing the inherent natural beauty that exists all around us. Vigorous bulls represent fecundity and wealth; simultaneously, they serve as products of consumption and capitalism. Grass, overlooked as a foundation for more beauteous flora, is elevated in Perez’ vision to Eden itself. Through Surrealist narratives rich with symbolism and moral query, Perez ruminates on fundamental human desires, existentialist unease, and the pursuit of perfection. Perez presented his first solo exhibition in the Upstairs space at Rachel Uffner Gallery in May 2022.In addition to Perez’ focus presentation, the gallery will exhibit a selection of new works by the following artists. Sacha Ingber (b. 1987, Rio de Janeiro) will present three functional, ceramic tables interwoven with traditional Brazilian cane webbing. A new free-standing sculpture, inspired the artist’s pregnancy, transforms the body into an architectural vessel. Her work was recently exhibited in the Upstairs Gallery in November 2022. Anna Jung Seo (b. 1964, Seoul, South Korea) will present four small, vibrant canvases inspired by symbolist elements in nature. Her xzsaqwork was recently shown at Kiaf Seoul 2023. Erica Mao (b. 1994, Columbia, MD) will present five new paintings of mythical landscapes and treacherous terrains, each populated with amorphous figures searching for shelter. Finally, Roger White (b. 1976, Salem, OR), who has had four solo exhibitions at the gallery, will present two new paintings – one as an homage to the Japanese novelist Kenzaburo Oe who passed away earlier this year and the other a scene of a local swimmer experiencing a moment of equilibrium.Additional works by Anne Buckwalter (b. 1987, Lancaster, PA), Susan Chen (b. 1992, Hong Kong, China), Bernadette Despujols (b. 1986, Barquisimeto, Venezuela), Talia Levitt (b. 1989, Brooklyn, NY), and Hana Yilma Godine (b. 1986, Arssi Negele, Ethiopia) will round out the booth. Yilma Godine’s second solo show at Rachel Uffner Gallery will open in January 2024, preceding Chen’s solo presentation in March 2024. Despujols’ solo exhibition will follow in May 2024. -
