Rachel Uffner Gallery at NADA Miami
Strauss Bourque-LaFrance, Joanne Greenbaum, Sam Moyer, Sara Greenberger RaffertyRachel Uffner Gallery, New York and Galerie Rodolphe Janssen, Brussels are pleased to present a solo exhibition of new work by Sam Moyer at the M Building during Art Basel Miami Beach 2014. Concurrent with the M building exhibition, Moyer will present a monumental public work as part of the Public sector of Art Basel Miami Beach, in collaboration with the Public Art Fund and the Bass Museum, Miami Beach. For the M Building, Moyer presents a series of new works that pair slabs of marble with ink dyed fabric mounted to MDF, continuing her interest in material, scale, and perception. The stones, discarded castoffs from interior design projects, retain their natural shapes and scars of misuse, while the fabric is hand-dyed, stretched, and shaped to cater to the edge of the stone. Calling into question concerns of surface and depth in painting and sculpture, these objects become equal partners, transcending their own materiality. The fabric assumes the weight of stone while the stone itself floats light as cloth against the gallery wall. Accompanying the wall works will be six concrete and marble benches, activating the space and allowing the viewer to directly engage with the materials. For the Public project, Moyer will create a freestanding wall composed of poured cement and marble remnants that form an ambiguous mosaic form, mining the polarities within sculpture and architecture, interior and exterior, surface and support, and natural vs. manmade landscape. As the choice of materials and scale in Moyer’s work continues to expand, new questions about function and architecture arise, complicating painting's role within this spatial framework.
