Bianca Beck (b. 1979, Columbus, OH) brings expressionist painting to a series of biomorphic papier-mâché and fiberglass forms. The papier-mâche sculptures are for indoor enviornments while the fiberglass works can be installed outside. The artist takes the human figure as a point of departure and considers the expansion of the individual in response to collectivity, expression, creativity, and partnership. Informed by political protest, her practice focuses on the exploration of bodies en masse and the external dynamics of movement and shared experience. In 2018 works from this series entered the collections of The Dallas Museum of Art as well as The Rachofsky Collection.
Beck earned a BFA from Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA and an MFA from Yale University, New Haven, CT. The artist has participated in exhibitions at Opelvillen Rüsselsheim, Rüsselsheim, Germany; V1 Gallery, Copenhagen, Denmark; the FLAG Art Foundation, New York, NY; White Columns, New York, NY; and Cheim & Read, New York, NY; among others. Beck is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including the Helen Winternitz Award for Excellence in Painting at Yale University, New Haven, CT; The Ox-Bow School of Art Fellowship Program, Saugatuck, MI; and Artist-in-Residence at Complimenta, Ithaca, NY.
Anya Kielar's (b. 1978, New York, NY) practice continuously investigates the complexity of representing the female form and the transformations that occur in an individual throughout their lifetime. Drawing from a set of disparate sources and traditions, from the Art Deco movement to domestic folk craft, Kielar's work is characterized by a profoundly immersive studio process that emphasizes the sensitivity and intimacy of handmade objects. Fusing the artist's last several bodies of work, the shadow boxes incorporate hand-painted textiles and sculptural aspects simultaneously in a defiant embrace of forms and techniques traditionally coded as feminine. Kielar will present her third solo exhibition with the gallery in January 2021.
Kielar earned a BFA from The Cooper Union School of Art, New York, NY and an MFA from Columbia University, New York, NY. Kielar has been featured in exhibitions at the Rubell Family Collection, Miami, FL; The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art, Ursinus College, Collegeville, PA; the FLAG Art Foundation, New York, NY; White Columns, New York, NY; and the Zabludowicz Collection, London, England, among many others. Kielar received the Martin Birbaum Scholarship in 2004, a Columbia University General Scholarship in 2003, and the Leslie-Lohman Award for Visual Arts in 2002. Her work is included in the Dikeou Collection, Denver, CO; Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA; the Rubell Family Collection, Miami, FL; and the Zabuldowicz Collection, London, England. Kielar lives and works in New York, NY.
